-What is Aesthetic dentistry?

Aesthetic dentistry is a facet of dentistry that deals with enhancement, restoration, and maintenance of optimal dental health specifically designed for you.  Things have to work right before they can look good to gain longevity.  If you control the forces that cause teeth to breakdown they will last much longer. It is based on artistic creation in a framework of science.  It utilizes the most advanced techniques and materials to give natural looking and feeling results that can greatly enhance your life.  Aesthetics can be defined as the study or theory of beauty and of the psychological responses to it.  Aesthetics in dentistry is much more than just how it looks and it’s the most comprehensive and complex part of dentistry.  It is the fusion of art and science within the framework of form following function.  It is as much about the visible three-dimensional restorations that we create and how they fit within the physiologic system as it is about the invisible influence we leave on the psyche.

-What makes a good aesthetic and restorative dentist?

A good aesthetic dentist is someone that can understand and use science, can think like an artist and has the technical skills of a master.  Often it will take years to acquire the expertise, skills and judgment to excel in this area.

Look at the credentials and educational background and ask questions. You should want someone with specific training and expertise, not just someone who uses the term cosmetic in an ad.  Ask to see examples of before and after cases that have been completed by the dentist.  Find out from other patients that have had similar treatments completed how their experience was and what their results have been.  Talk with the doctor and staff and see if there is a fit.  This can be one of life’s most significant and altering events and it should feel right.  Don’t let anyone talk you into doing any of this; it has to be something you want.  It is your choice.

-How can you change the position and appearance of my teeth in as little as two visits?

With modern dental technology, uneven teeth can be reshaped and laminated with high-tech ceramics to give the appearance and function of a symmetrical smile.  The extent to which this approach can be used depends on how crooked and crowned the teeth are to begin with.  It is absolutely amazing what we can do.  For many adults this option is better than traditional orthodontics and can be completed in just a few weeks.  This is why we offer consultations to see if we can meet your desires.

-What can be done if I have stained or discolored teeth?

If the only thing you want to do to change your smile is make it brighter – different whitening procedures may be your answer.  There are different techniques, some are done at home and others in a condensed time during an office visit.  After analyzing what would work best for you, an informed decision can be made.

-What if I have missing teeth?

Many options exist, including bridges, implants or even precision fit natural looking and feeling partial dentures.  There is no reason to live with missing teeth.  Nor only does a full set of teeth improve self esteem but it makes all of the other teeth last longer by reducing the stress placed on the remaining natural teeth.  It also can improve enunciation (speech), digestion and the sense of taste.  Many individuals with TMD (tempromandibular joint disorder) cannot be pain-free without full dentition.

-What if I am not happy with my smile?

Smiles are all unique and the reasons a person may not like their own smile is about as personal as it gets.  We are very skilled and experienced at determining the key factors to enhancing any smile.  Factors may include:

Crooked, missing, poorly shaped or discolored teeth
Mismatched, unattractive or failing previous dentistry that can be recent or quite old
Uneven or excessive display of the gum tissue
Uneven or slanted display of the teeth
Underlying skeletal malformations that can cause the teeth to be crowded,
excessively prominent or retruded, or have spaces between them
Worn, chipped or broken teeth

The best way to decide what will work for you is to come talk to us.  In many cases we can show you what a change may look like and help you decide if it is right for you.  We can give you references to others that may have had your particular type of problem and can tell you about their experiences and the benefits they have seen since their own particular treatment.

-What can you tell me about amalgam or mercury-silver fillings?

Amalgam fillings, sometimes referred to as mercury-silver fillings are the most commonly placed filling material according to a survey done y the American Dental Association (ADA) in 2000.  Since the major component of amalgam is mercury and not silver, they should be referred to as mercury fillings.  More than 78% of the dentists surveyed considered it the material of choice and the main reasons given were that it was cheap, easy to place and had longevity.

We chose to stop placing amalgam filling long ago for the following reasons:

  1. Amalgam filling actually weaken the tooth over time by expanding and tend to cause recurring decay, fracturing teeth from the inside, similar to splitting wood with a wedge.

  2. The material typically contains about 50% mercury and even though the ADA has deemed it safe, it is still considered a toxic and hazardous material outside the mouth.  Several European countries have banned the use of the material.

  3. Amalgam fillings are very unaesthetic and because of corrosion typically turn dark with time.  There are more aesthetic and environmentally safer materials to use.  And with these new materials it is possible to predictably bond teeth back together, virtually restoring them back to their virgin strength without the invasiveness of full-coverage restorations.  In the majority of circumstances, crowns can be replaced with more conservative techniques.

By intercepting the potential of fracture before experiencing symptoms of hot/cold sensitivity and biting pain, new conservative treatments are preventing the side effects of toothaches and broken teeth.  Using a proactive rather than reactive approach to amalgam replacement is something many patients have chosen.

-What is Full Mouth Rejuvenation?

Full Mouth Rejuvenation is a comprehensive, non-surgical approach to properly aligning your mouth, removing decay and disease, and repairing all chipped, worn, or broken teeth.  The result is a healthy, beautiful smile, and with proper care you may not have to have anything done to your teeth or mouth again.

Our quality of life is greatly affected by our oral health.  The older we get the more important it becomes.

You do not have to be dissatisfied with the way your smile looks and feels.  You do not have to be uncomfortable when you chew or not be able to eat hot or cold foods.  You do not have to awaken in the morning with sore jaw muscles or live with recurring headaches.

Using advanced technology and an artistic eye, full mouth rejuvenation may be the answer to many of these problems.

-What is neuromuscular dentistry?

Neuromuscular dentistry addresses the muscles of the head & neck, the nerves related to them and the way they interact.  It involves using the muscles and nervous innervations of the body to position the jaw into a physiologically balanced, functional and comfortable position.  Through neuromuscular dentistry we can often diagnose problems and positively change structures controlled by major nerves.
